In the Old Days

There was a single button. You pushed it and you got what you got. Often times it wasn't what you wanted but you were happy because it was something that you didn't have before.

I miss the old days but I never miss being a child. Being a child means watching someone else push the button for you whether you want them to or not.

You Don't Have to Dump It On Me

but if you're having a bad day and I ask how your day's going, I won't freak out if you admit it.

Strangers

She held a Forget-me-not by the stem, the petals of one flower just underneath her nose. "I think I may have known you before," she said, her eyes lost to the place where dreams are born.

"You never knew any-thing. You never knew a thing at all." I took her free hand and spun her like I've seen in the movies. "That's why I like you so much."

She held the flower away. "You think, it's a game we're playing. There's no starting over, this. There's no other." She turned suddenly and ran away from me like everything I've ever wanted has always ran away from me. She stopped after a score of yards.

I caught up to her. When I was close enough to hear the whispers of rain in her hair, I asked how she knew me.

"From before," she said. "From when we were strangers."

We were never strangers.

We never knew each other and I knew she was a lie.
